Major theme: Astronomy is an observational, not an experimental science.
Learning Objectives:
- Compare the two main types of optical telescopes and how they gather and focus light.
- Outline the main functions of a telescope (light-gathering power, resolution, and magnifying power) and relate each to a telescope’s design.
- Summarize the main types of detectors that are used on telescopes.
- Explain why some wavelengths of radiation must be observed from space.
- Explain the benefits of sending spacecraft to study the planets and moons of our solar system.
- Describe other astronomical tools that contribute to the study of the universe.
Outline:
Optical telescope design
- Refracting telescopes
- Reflecting telescopes: Newtonian, Cassegrain
Properties and Function of Telescope
- Light-gathering power
- Resolving fine detail
- Magnification
Invisible Astronomy (the dawn of Multi-wavelength Astronomy)
- Atmospheric distortion and light pollution
- Radio astronomy
- Infrared telescopes
- X-Ray space-based observatories
Activities & Assignments:
Read Chapter 6: Astronomical Instruments
400 years of the Telescope: Complete the video questions handed out in class and posted to this units notes folder).
Telescope Activity- the telescope simulator:
Lab 5: Light and Telescope Lab (see lab manual).
Start Team Task assignments with The Great Observatories: see class calendar for due dates. Post your presentation to the unit 5 assignment folder. Instructions were provided in class and are posted in this unit’s note folder.
Midterm Exam: This is a comprehensive exam covering the first half of the semester (textbook chapters 1-6). It will include multiple choice and free response questions on conceptual understanding and quantitative computation (e.g. word problems). You may use one notebook sheet of paper for notes (8″ x 11″ both sides). The study guide is posted in Unit 6 notes folder.
Extra Stuff:
Read about the workings of a professional astronomer behind the scenes at the Keck Observatory.
How to choose a good telescope
Telescopes from the Ground Up .
NASA’s astrophysics multiwavelength astronomy website.
Star Watch: Bring jacket, binoculars, your observation log and a red flashlight (if you have one). See online calendar for scheduled times and dates.
